What is the world turning into?
I wonder to myself…
Almost every other day when we turn the pages of the newspapers, we see and read incidents of robberies, snatch thefts, rapes, kidnaps and murder incidents happening. To me, the world is getting more and more ugly and scary. I know times are bad and people are desperate to survive but still....
Back in the 50s to 80s, that was the period of time that our parents and I were still granted with “freedom”. We could run around in the neighborhood, cycling and etc – fearlessly; worries free. Nowadays? We have to quickly lock our doors and keep the gates closed once we are home; we lock our car doors locked once we get in to it. Yet, the window can be smashed….
Just last week, I witnessed an elderly lady got mugged. Today, I heard a real-life incident of kidnapping. This morning, my colleague was telling us that her friend got kidnapped while he was on his way to work during the wee hours. A car which looked like a police car forced him to stop as he entered his parking lot. He was dragged out from his car and the bad guys wanted his money. Unfortunately, he didn’t have his ATM card with him, so instead they blind folded, tied him and beat him up badly. They transported him to the nearby township.
With a bleeding face and hands tied, no one along the way lend him a helping hand. He managed to walk his way to the nearest petrol station. The station’s attendant cut the strings off and he made his back to his office to get his car. Too bad, luck wasn’t on his side, the bad guys managed to get pass the security guards (the crooks threatened to hurt the guards) and stole his car! What stupid security guards, they were. They didn’t even report the incident to the police after they left! Sigh…..
Nowadays, I don’t think anyone would dare to stop to help anyone who looked needy. There is a possibility that the person who looked pitiful might be the culprit.
Will you help someone who is lying by the roadside? Will you be daring enough to get down from your car if someone hit your car? *Touch wood, choi choi choi!*
What if it is a genuine case? Will someone be left in danger or is there a kind soul willing to help?
